Choosing strip width and strip length in stripcropping [Practice Abstract]
Stripcropping is a cultivation method in which multiple crops are grown side by side in long, narrow strips. How should farmers determine strip width and length? A factsheet on stripcropping and mechanization summarizes key considerations.
Strip width
The primary criterion is machinery. Ideally, the strip width equals or is a multiple of the working width of the most frequently used machine, or of the machine required for the highest-yielding crop. This ensures efficiency, as the machine only needs to pass once per strip. Since machinery widths often differ, compromises may be needed. The rule of thumb is: as narrow as possible – to maximize ecological benefits – and as wide as necessary to maintain efficient mechanization. In practice, conventional growers often prefer wider strips due to spraying equipment, while organic growers tend toward narrower strips.
Strip length
This is primarily determined by harvesting logistics, particularly the maximum loading capacity. The harvester type and adjacent crop choice both matter. With direct discharge, the neighbouring strip must either have been harvested earlier or be drivable. With bunker harvesting, farmers must consider whether adjacent strips are accessible. If yes, strip length should reflect the machine’s loading capacity and may be divided with a green strip if needed. If no, strip length is less critical. Where one crop imposes constraints, a designated harvesting strip or green strip can facilitate operations.
